Long Game according to a quick online search:
a long-term strategy or endeavor.
I keep coming back to this phrase as I start 2019 I know a few things to be true in this life.
The really good things that happen to us, around us, or through us do not happen in the blink of an eye, but instead, they happen over time and seasons.
I know this to be true, but there have been things that have seemed too large and big and out of reach in the ‘blink of an eye’ immediate type of moment – that I have simply passed on over the years.
I get frustrated when things do not work in a moment. I could make a long list of things that cause me frustration when they do not work out quickly.
But with the wisdom that age and the grace of the Creator brings, I am starting to act differently. And I am putting myself in places where I know the venture will not happen overnight.
I am tending to some more long-term seeds in my family, my home, the land I have the privilege of living on. I am also cultivating friendships with the long game in mind. I am going tend to more reading and writing, knowing there are some things that are longing to break out of the soil.
Right now as I type this, a few feet away are 4 small pots with bonsai trees (in seed form) in them. I started the seeds on January 1, 2019. It will be three years before the trees are ready to be shaped. That is 2022.
I will tend to these seeds and soil.
I will water them daily.
I will give them more room when they need it.
Bonsai trees are a long man’s game.
The long game my friends. It helps us realize that what we will leave behind – our legacy – is bound up in how we do the small things in faithful and attentive ways. It is the work we do and it is also how we do that work. It is the day in and day out work we do with clean hearts and a clear direction.
Strength & Courage,
